Big day for NW Soccer
Tonight's game at Plymouth is the last regular season NLC fixture for the Panthers. A win will guarantee a 4th place finish in the NLC. During the game, the IHSAA will start their webcast with the annual sectional draw.
The JV already beat Plymouth (1-0) once this season -during the JV NLC tourney- and hopes to repeat that feat. It would be nice to come away with two wins and a favorable Sectional draw. NorthWood has been assigned to Sectional 12 at Newton Park with LaVille (host), Bremen and John Glenn.

JV game added for 2011-2012 season
Next year the JV will add another game to the schedule. John Glenn High School will have a JV for the 2nd year and the Athletic Office was able to add that contest to the schedule. The game will be played on the same night the varsity plays John Glenn. This means that the JV will play 15 games and a 2 game tournament in 2011.

Concord-NorthWood 2-1 (0-0)
Not the usual Saturday at Concord. No power at the beginning of the game, a field that was much too wet and the net barely attached to the -old- goals.
A first half that was controlled for the most part by Concord but ended in 0-0 (with some great saves by Kyle that kept us in the game). But a second half with the Panthers taking it to the Minutemen most of the time. A well played game and especially second half were it not for a couple of man marking miscues. Now, most of the time a couple of mistakes per game is pretty good, but today it cost a couple of goals (scored by Stubbs and Wysong, the usual suspects). We managed to come back on a Connor Beckwith goal (free kick, nice to score off of a set piece)to close the gap to 2-1 but that was it. A lot of players and spectators thought the referee (who seemed to have a bit of an off day) withheld the Panthers a penalty kick when Taylor Wegmiller got fouled in the box deep into the second half but the way he was calling the game, it would have been a surprise to get what we had coming. All in all, it's becoming obvious that we are working as a team and are every bit as good as the competition.
NOTES
The JV lost 2-0 to Concord
Next up: Plymouth away Tuesday.
Varsity record 8-4-0 (2-4-0 NLC).
JV is 5-6-1

NorthWood - John Glenn 6-0 (3-0)
After Memorial it was now John Glenn's turn to visit the Panthers and try out the soccer field with 7 blends of grass (if you count dead grass as a blend). If you want to use the analogy to another sport, if this would be a basketball court, it would be a floor that was not level and have pieces of wood missing. But we make do, we have for almost a decade and a half. At least the grass had been mowed, no clumps of grass were left behind and the paint looked oh so beautiful.
Unfortunately Glenn had upgraded their uniforms to the cheapest adidas (use Coach Hoover's pronounciation; AAAAAADEEEEEDAAASH)version so from now on we can only make fun of their home kits. Glenn would face one of their own this evening: Clayton Seitz, a former John Glenn product. Good thing he came here so we could turn his career around.
It was a nice evening, a nice crowd and a nice result.
FIRST HALF
In what looked to be an eerie flashback to the Memorial game, it was the former astronaut who almost went one on one with Kyle in the first (yes you read that right, the first) minute of play. A somewhat lethargic start to the game. The eleventh minute saw the first of what would be an evening with many NW corners. Eddie put the ball in the mix and Josh Ailes got two of his ribs on the ball and the redirect put the ball in the net for the 1-0.
Josh had told me before the game that he would put in two and that the final would be 5-0.
Thirteen minutes later Noodle placed a ball thru on the ground to Taylor who controlled the ball for a few touches and then kicked it past the Falcons' keeper for the 2-0. Taylor also signed for the 3-0, only two minutes later, when Ryan Lincoln passed another ball thru on the ground to Taylor who did not hesitate and beat the keeper. In the 34th, Taylor got the ball up the middle once again and dribbled at the keeper. He was unable to get the instep on the ball and mistakenly toe balled it to the right. It could have been a pure hat trick.
In the 41st minute Trent got open near the box and went one on one with the Glenn keeper who made a nice save. Eddie's shot came after a Jason Callejas pass, the GK was able to make a decent save to keep the score at 3-0.
HALf TIME
The main focus was more on effort, making runs and passing then anything else because despite the comfortable lead, we had not played real well.
SECOND HALF
Expectations were fairly high for the second half. We had the (hard) wind in the back so we were hoping to put a little more pressure on the defense and we were hoping that Roman would carry a touch of genius with him again like he did against Memorial.
Seven minutes into the second half gave us a sign of things to come; Jason Callejas (you will see this name again) passed the ball to his left to Josh who had a great take, the solid shot shook the dust of the ropes, 4-0.
In the 62nd, Josh Ailes had the chance for a "hattie" but his shot hit the crossbar. Justen Hochstetler must have enjoyed that feat so much that when he had a chance in the box only a minute later, he, in adoration no doubt, did the same thing....he hit the crossbar.
Apparently Noodle (Roman Ortiz-Prather....and yes I know....Spain won the World Cup)had enough and after he received the ball from Jason Callejas, placed the ball from the top of the box inside the left post for a genius goal, 5-0. Eusebio played a nice game in the middle and the second half our defense stepped it up against a team that was not afraid to take shots from just about any spot. Jacob Smith was dealing with a back injury and had come off early in the first half (he is saving himself for Concord). Clay Seitz did a real nice job taking over for Jake in the sweeper position. Jiovanni used his speed by taking the ball away from several Glenn midfielders. Coo and Tad did a nice job replacing the defenders (Collin and Kronk who both played well) in the late stages of the game. And speaking of Coo; he tried to steal the show. In the 68th, Coo positioned himself close to the left post (he kinda looks like the left post, doesn't he?)on a NW corner. The ball made its way to Coo's noggin and went towards the frame where the Glenn keeper made a save to prevent the 6-0. That opportunity inspired the Coo man to try even harder. In the 69th minute, Coo got the ball about 48 1/2 yards out and he decided (at least that is what he said after the game)he was gonna take a shot at goal. The kick floated thru the air like a cotton ball and looked like it would go in the goal in the upper 90 only to be stopped awkwardly by the Falcons' goalie.
When it looked like Josh's prediction would hold up (2 goals for him, 5 for the Panthers, none for Glenn) it was that very Josh Ailes who managed to screw that up. In the 80th minute of play it was again Jason Callejas who passed the ball to Josh (this would be Jason's third assist on the day), who in turn put the ball to the right side of the goal and into the net for his first ever Varsity hat trick. Final score, 6-0.
Speaking of 6, this was NorthWood's 6th shutout and Kyle's 6th clean sheet of the season.
NOTES
The JV did not play but the good news is that Glenn now has a JV and will play our JV next year. That will even up the number of games the JV and Varsity play each season.
The Varsity's record improves to 8-3-0 (2-3-0 NLC).
Next up for both squads; Concord at Concord on Saturday (tomorrow), JV start at 10 am, Varsity at 11:45. The bus will leave 8:45 (I think, will make announcement this afternoon).
Both teams practice at the High School this afternoon. It will be a usual Friday practice.

The write up in the Elkhart Truth 09/22/10 by Anthony Anderson
NAPPANEE -- It took Roman Ortiz-Prather almost 10 games to score his first goal of the season.
It took the NorthWood High School junior less than another two minutes to score his second.
Ortiz-Prather's initial two goals of the fall staked the host Panthers to an early 2-0 lead, and Memorial couldn't conquer that kind of Roman empire while falling 4-1 in Northern Lakes Conference boys soccer Tuesday night.
"The guys have been giving him a hard time all year, so it's good to see it finally happen," NorthWood coach Brad Duerksen said of the goal-column goose egg Ortiz-Prather owned going in.

That hard time he was getting came only because Ortiz-Prather is capable.
"He creates a lot in the midfield for us," Duerksen said. "He's a very unselfish player. He's an ideal mid, works both ends of the field. He's just as happy to block a shot as score a goal. You love that from a soccer player."
Ortiz-Prather tallied in the 17th minute and again in the 18th.
Both scores came on aesthetic assists. On the first, Ryan Lincoln from the left flank hit Ortiz-Prather on the right side with a semi-blind pass for a 12-yard score. On the second, Eddie Salinas lofted a long skip from the left wing that Ortiz-Prather headed in from about 8 yards.
"We had defensive miscommunication on both shots, but they were nice shots," Crimson Charger coach Dan Sullivan said. "You don't want to take anything away from NorthWood on those."
Taylor Wegmiller added the Panthers' third goal just 3:32 into the second half, before Salinas, on a long lead up the middle from Lincoln, boosted NorthWood's cushion to 4-0 with 14:10 to play.
The Panthers improved to 7-3 overall, matching last season's win total when they finished 7-7-3, and advanced to 2-3 in the NLC.
Memorial, which had gone 2-0-1 in its last three games, dropped to 2-7-2 overall, 1-4-1 in the league.
The Chargers actually had more shots on goal than the hosts, eight to seven, but never got off a legitimately threatening one until inside of 25 minutes remaining.
"The thing we did well, especially when we had our starters in, was force the other team to keep their stuff long range, and then Kyle (Dijkstra in goal) did a nice job cleaning up in those first 60 minutes," Duerksen said. "So I was pleased with the defense. On the other hand, we lost some our intensity, but it's easy to do with a three-goal lead."
"We have a tendency to want to possess the ball a little too long and find that perfect shot instead of taking what the other team is willing to give you," Sullivan said. "NorthWood's guys did a good job putting pressure on us in the midfield, but when we do get it to our forwards, we've gotta take a shot. It doesn't always have to be pretty."
Youthful Memorial -- which started seven sophomores, two juniors and two freshmen -- broke through in the 70th minute when Noah Strati scored off a Jose Garcia pass.

Looking ahead....
Thursday September 23 the Panthers will host John Glenn (the school)but it is a Varsity only contest that will start at 5 PM. It would be nice to get a nice size crowd. The John Glenn Falcons have by far the ugliest uniforms of any team we play and that alone is worth the price of admission.
NorthWood - Memorial 4-1 (2-0)
Temperatures in the 80's at the end of September, a Varsity NLC match up that has the potential for the second NLC win of the season and 7th overall and a shot at 500 for the JV.
FIRST HALF
A small crowd showed up for a big game. The introductions were outstanding once again with Conner BBBBBBBeckwith as the newest addition, somewhat reminiscent of the Kenny Beachy days. The start of the game was unfortunately a bit on the sloppy side with not many of the players having good touch. The first great moment of the game came in the 16th when a Ryan Lincoln pass found its way to Noodle who took one touch to control the ball and another to place it in the corner of the goal away from the keeper for the 1-0. The next good moment in the game came off a nice cross from the left from Eddie Salinas to Noodle who, with great composure and zip, headed the ball in the left side net for the 2-0 lead.
The 22nd minute needed a Kyle Dijkstra save to keep a 2 goal lead. The 39t and 40th saw two nice opportunities for Josh who in the first chance got a ball from Noodle from the right in the middle of the box but with his left missed to the right of the goal; in the next chance Josh received a pass off Lincoln's boot on the left side inside the box but missed to the left. Both runs however were real nice that deserved a better result.
HALF TIME
Besides some technical matters, the main topic was complacency.
SECOND HALF
The second act started like the first, sloppy plays, no runs and neither team looking too good. But a throw in from Collin in the 44th changed the way the game was looking to go. The ball went over the right defender and Taylor took the ball with him near the box and after a touch took a great shot with an unbelievable dip that hit the back of the ropes, 3-0!
Two minutes later, a Connor cross from the right to Noodle in the left side of the box was re-directed by Noodle by way of a header right in front of Lincoln. Lincoln takes the shot but misses to the keepers left. But the combination was a thing of beauty!
Since the crowd was quiet, very quiet considering it had been a while since the Panthers had won a NLC home game, coach Duerksen tried to get the crowd going but found out that the only response came from the trains' whistles. But we will take what we can get.
In the 68th minute of play, Lincoln received the ball in the middle cirkle. From that spot he passed a thru ball on the ground to Eddie who, after battling a defender, came away with the ball and went 1 on 1 with the keeper beating him with composure for the the 4-0 lead.Despite the promise from Jason that he would score the 5th goal, it was Memorial who with 10 minutes left to play, toyed with our defense on the left side and went to goal. Their #6 put the ball past our keeper for what turned out to be the final score 4-1.
NOTES
The JV did even better then Varsity and played to a 6-0 win with goals from Parker, Barahona, Kolton,Carter Beebe,Caleb and Flick. The JV is now a 500 ball club with a record of 5-5-1. Nice job. The JV has off this coming Thursday and will return to action against Concord on Saturday.
Both JV and Varsity have quite an array of goal scorers.
Varsity moves to 7-3 on the season.

NLC JV Tourney
BETWEEN GAMES
The Panther's JV squad came home with a second place performance in Flight B of the NLC JV Tourney ahead of Plymouth and Memorial and behind winner Warsaw. The first game against Plymouth was decided by a Barahona goal (rebound off the keeper after a Tomas "Rosicky" Matas shot) resulting in a 1-0 win. The second game against Warsaw ended in a 3-0 loss.
South Bend Riley - NorthWood 0-3 (0-1)
By all accounts quite the game. The action after the tea was actually impressive and the best half of the year (yes, wait til I'm not there and then you do this!). Phenomenol was the word coach Duerksen used to describe both the performance of the entire team in the second half as well as some of Kyle's saves in the goal. A total team performance resulted in a alert first half goal by Trent "Michelin" Jacobs and two second half goals; one from Taylor Wegmiller and the other coming from Ryan Lincoln. The team improves to 6-3-0 on the season! Next up NLC opponent Elkhart Memorial on Tuesday. Let's get #7!!!!
Friday, September 17, 2010
