FC Groningen played a "heroic" game according to their website, against Italian side Fiorentina. Nevland had opened the score in the 55th, Fiorentina drew even at minute 59. After regular and extra time, the score was still 1-1. After a series of pk's, the score was tied, 3-3. Fiorentina had missed one, the FC two. It was Fiorentina who did not miss the last pk, sending them into the next round. This is the second year in a row the the FC gets knocked out of the UEFA Cup by means of penalty kicks.
