AC Open Gym - new starting time!
Starting Monday December 7, Open Gym will start around 7:30 -maybe a little after- and will last til about 9 pm. Due to the start of the basketball season we are forced to move the starting time back just a bit. Since both coaches will be at a basketball game at the Pit on monday, we ask that everybody gets to the AC around 7:30 and as soon as the coaches show up we will start play.

Fall Awards correction
The Fall Awards on November 3rd will start at 6:30 pm and NOT at 7 pm as first reported. The mistake is entirely to blame on me and I therefore was unable to locate anyone I could blame for it and I regret that even more then the mistake itself.

Fall Sports Awards Night
The Fall Awards Night will be on Tuesday November 3 at 7 pm in the auditorium. Boys Soccer will award the winner of the "Kyle Hunsberger Award", the MVP, Captains and Most Improved as well as All NLC and Honorable Mention NLC. The off season schedule will be a topic of discussion as well.
NLC change for 2010
Next season, the NLC will finally adopt the rule where a win earns a team 3 points and a tie one point. Until now, the NLC was one of the last conferences to hold on to the 2 points for a win and one for a draw rule.

Turn in your uniforms - reminder
ALL (varsity and JV) need to meet with their coaches at the GAME FIELD after school tomorrow - wednesday Oct. 14- around 3:30 pm. You need to help with taking down the nets, benches etc. and all uniforms (!) and warmups need to be turned in. Make sure all shirts/shorts etc. have been washed. This should take about an hour. We will also discuss the off season schedule (open gym and indoor soccer at the Elkhart Sports Center).
NorthWood's Soccer All NLC & HM
All NLC honors as well as Honorable Mention are voted on by the NLC head coaches. This year, NorthWood received more votes then ever before. All NLC are: Cesar Salinas, senior, Ryan Lincoln, junior and Maliq Taylor, junior. Honorable Mention: Eddie Salinas, sophomore. Congratulations.

Thanks for the 2009 pictures
I want to thank Lindy Seitz for providing me (and all the parents) with pictures from each Varsity and JV game, including the pre-season tournament, JV Tourney and the Sectionals. It made the blog somewhat bearable and certainly more colorful. So thanks again for a great job and I am looking forward to quite a few more years of game photos.
Season Over
A 77th minute Bremen goal in the LaVille Sectional ends the Panthers' season, despite Cam Seitz's great effort. LaVille beat Glenn 8-1. The Panthers end the season with a 6-7-3 record.
Wednesday October 14, the team (Varsity & JV) will meet at the game field to take down the nets and hand in all jerseys/shorts and warm ups!
Open Gym can not start until Monday November 2nd (IHSAA rules do not allow for OG to start until after the State Finals have concluded). This means that all players, unfortunately, have a full three weeks off.

LaVille Sectional @ Newton Park
NorthWood will play Bremen in the second game tomorrow night in the LaVille Sectional. The game will start at 7 pm and will follow the Glenn-LaVille (5pm) game. The winners advance to the sectional championship on Saturday night. Bobbie is out due to an ankle injury and Eddie is recuperating from a shoulder injury. Hopefully he will be able to play. Temperatures are predicted to be around 50 degrees at game time with a chance of showers. Great weather for a soccer game! Hopefully the team will be supported by a lot of fans (parents, girlfriends, grandparents) to counter the large group of supporters from Bremen.

NorthWood @ Bethany Christian 1-1 (0-0)
Another contest played in dismal weather forced Lumber Jake to dress for deer hunting succes. Thank goodness the warm up music was great....... if you lived in Scotland in 1981 and were inebriated. I don't think I have ever heard Dexy's Midnight Runners' "Come on Eileen" twice in a day, ever! The weather would eventually have an impact on the superb sound system as well. The announcer however never gave up even though all you could hear was part of every 62nd word.
FIRST HALF
Bethany used the trademark "NorthWood" kick off to create danger in the first seconds of the game but thanks to a early great save by Maliq Taylor the scoreboard did not have to be changed. Most of the first twenty minutes went to bethany who came at the Panthers thru mostly #7 Jesse Ramer. He took the ball and distributed much like Vervynckt had done a couple of days earlier. In the 20th, Lincoln got a ball thru the box but it went wide for our first corner. In the 30th a NW counter from Eddie landed on the far right side of the box where the Bruins keeper tried to keep the ball in. Conner beat him to the ball and with the keeper out, shot the ball at a difficult angle at the goal. The ball hit the crossbar and went over.
SECOND HALF
Bethany started pressing right away in an effort to get a quick goal. They were succesful in the 45th minute when a ball in the box could not be cleared out sufficiently. Bruins midfielder Matt Weaver got a boot on the ball and knocked it in the back of the net for the 1-0. But now we got to see the real NW soccer team. Responding in aggressive attacking fashion, it was Lincoln who turned up the heat in the 47th with a shot that missed to the right. Minutes later a cross was headed by Noodle on goal and the Bruins goalie was lucky in grabbing it with his right hand. It could have been the equalizer. For the first fifteen minutes after the Bethany goal, NorthWood was the team in control of the game. Nice passes were strung together and dangerous attacks came especially over the left flank, courtesy of Eddie and Lincoln. The defense had another solid performance with exceptional play from Cam, Cesar and (Lumber)Jake who kept stuffing Ramer time and time again. With ten minutes left to play, more players were told to play in a more offensive mode. Kronk and Eddie pushed up more and it created more pressure on the Bethany defense. With 20seconds left to play a ball played at the Bethany sweeper was not cleared cleanly. As a matter of fact, the sweeper hit the ball with his outside right that made the ball go to his right while the spin on the ball made it go away from the goalie. Lincoln was very alert and ran onto the ball and shot the ball into the net to put NW level at 1-1. With time running out (quote from the announcer: "en, ine, eight, ven, ix,%$,or, three, ooo, one")NorthWood ended up with its second tie in three days against very good teams (combined 25 wins and three losses). With a good result tomorrow against and in Angola, the Panthers would have quite some momentum going into the LaVille Sectional.
JV
The JV played another close game but again came out on top by beating Bethany 1-0 on a Taylor Wegmiller (#8 for the season)although the Elkhart Truth has Clayton Seitz listed as the goal scorer. Speaking of Seitz; if you know anyone who goes to Bethany, tell them that Clayton's brother Cam left them a nice present by the first bush east of the RR crossing. If you find it you can keep it. Or split it with your friends. The JV record is now 7-5-2. If they win tomorrow, they will tie the school record of 8 wins (that record was 8-4-2, I believe in 2005). Kyle has recorded 7 shut outs so far (JV record).
The Varsity's record is 6-5-3 and a win tomorrow will guarantee a winning season again!
JV players need to be aware of the fact that they can only eat one (1, uno, un, een, eins)bag of chips. That way all varsity players will have one as well.
Bus leaves at 9 am at the AC. 11 and 1 pm starts tomorrow, should be back between 4 and 4:30 pm.

NorthWood- Plymouth 0-0
Senior Night turned out to be a cool and windy night but despite the weather, the fans pushed the turnstiles quite a few times. On tap tonight was the fixture against the 13-1-1 Rockies. It was probably the first time in NW soccer history we would face an opponent this late in the season with just one loss. Plymouth is not in the top 20 or Honorable Mention but for some reason only falls in the "Team To Watch" category.
Before the game all seven seniors were recognized with their parents and were given personalized blankets with the NW Panthers soccer emblem, name and number. The mothers were given flowers, except for Cesar who kept the flowers to give to his girlfriend. The seniors who were recognized were Michael Balogh, Bobby Delafuente, Kasey Grendys, Cesar Salinas, Cam Seitz, Daniel Villa and Patrick Thompson.
FIRST HALF
The wind advantage in the first half went to the Panthers who were playing from right to left from the coaches' perspective. Mr. Yoder manned the booth, and did a great job. The booth assistant and the Panthers' best cheerleader was the well rounded college student, former Holy Cross, current IUSB and future Purdue student Robbie Balogh.
It became clear early on that Plymouth is a technically skilled team with great passing abilities. Add to that the fact that they have 12 seniors with one of them having superb skill (#2 Vervynckt) and you have a very good NLC team that can come at you from different angles of attack all night long. Which is exactly what they ended up doing.
Already in the third minute, Plymouth had an open chance but the save by keeper Michael Balogh prevented the 1-0. NW was able to create some counters but they were few and far between. Most of the play, especially in the first half took place between the two 18's.
Plymouth substituted one of their players who, according to coach Duerksen, was a Chia Pet, but it did not lower the level of play.
Late in the second half a long pass ended up in front of Lincoln just outside the box but he took a touch to his left in an effort to circumevent the Rockies defense instead of one touch shooting it and the opportunity was lost.
Jake was given the task to mark Vervynckt but when coach Duerksen noticed that Vervynckt was coming up from a midfield position the team went from manmarking to the double stopper set up.
SECOND HALF
This half was dominated by Plymouth. Most of the play took place on our defensive third of the field but with great efforts from Kasey, Cesar, Cam, Kronk, Maliq (!) and Collin defensively, the Panthers were able to withstand wave after wave of Rockies coming at them. In the 63rd minute a quick counter went to Lincoln who hit a great cross from the left side to Noodle. Noodle had a great touch but saw it go just wide to the right. This NLC battle went to the last minute. Plymouth took the ball to NW time and time again, resulting in quite a few corners. One cross in the box came off Joshs' foot wrong but a miraculous save, courtesy of Maliq Taylor, preserved the draw for the Panthers.
The tie does a lot for the Panthers. If we play .500 the rest of the way, it will guarantee a winning season and at this point we still have a chance of getting up to 10 victories as well. All in all, this was a great effort, especially defensively, from all players with a great result. After upsetting Bethany on senior night last year, it is great to see that trend continue!
NOTES
Next up is Bethany Christian this Thursday (tomorrow) at Bethany. JV starts at 5pm, followed by the Varsity at 6:45 pm. After that we have one game left. We will travel to Angola on Saturday (bus leaves at 9 am).
We are on the road the rest of the year but hope to spend a lot of time at our home away from home, Lakeville.
The JV gave away a 1-0 lead in the last few minutes of the game but still ended up with a 1-1 tie. Tim, coach Mattern's "Honduran Assassin", scored the lone goal.Tim now has six goals, Taylor 7 for the season.
The Varsity's record is now 6-5-2 (1-4-2 NLC). The JV record is also 6-5-2.

NorthWood @ Glenn 4-0 (3-0)
The team arrived just in time to witness the senior night activities. The national anthem was performed by the North Liberty Girls Choir. Nothing is permanent at Glenn's soccer field however; the goals have wheels as does the scoreboard and the bleachers so I would suggest to drive it all to a real soccer field.
FIRST HALF
The first few minutes were played in a fashion that matched the pitch; rocky and bumpy but the team settled down quickly. A punt from Maliq in the 3rd went to Conner who slipped the ball to Noodle. He played the ball to Ryan who fell but the ball rolled towards Eddie. Eddie took a great solid shot that hit the onion bag hard, 1-0.
In the 10th minute of play, Conner got open with the ball and went one on one wth the goalie but missed to the right.
In the 21st Conner hit a nice shot that hit the crossbar.
In the 29th minute Eddie placed a corner on the ground across the box. Noodle had no problems finishing, 2-0.
In the 30th Cam passed the ball to Trent who applied the dummy and in turn made Kronk look like one when he didn't anticipate the pass and let it go over the sideline while shrieking his usual Kronk Honk. The ball went over the sidelines and endlines more then usual, mainly due to the very short and extremely narrow field.
When the final whistle blew, the Panthers had collected a total of 15 corners, a season record.
In the 37th minute a spectator of the Glenn persuasion started to argue with the AR about a throw in. The Center ref send him off. The man's wife came over to argue the case for her worse half. But apparently she lost her cause and the husband continued his way to the exit.
With seconds left to play in the half, Maliq kicked the ball to Lincoln who took a shot but the shot was blocked by Glenn defenders and recovered by Kronk. Kronk passed it back to Lincoln who hit the net for the 3-0 half time score.
SECOND HALF
Eddie took the first NW corner eight minutes into the half. His low corner went to Conner who connected for the Panthers' 4th unanswered goal.
Minutes later Kronk went for a fifty fifty ball, tried to shield the ball and keep a Glenn midfielder off the ball. While holding the Glenn player's "jersey" everyone could hear the Glenn player howl in agony. When he gave his coach the universal sign for "distress in the crotch area", he was substituted. Soon after Kronk came out and was asked for an explanation. Kronk stated that he tried to hold the guy off by holding his shirt but inadvertently (hopefully) held on to his private part a little too hard and too long resulting in the substitution request. This might have been the most exciting occurence in the second half, at least for some.
After a 62nd minute blatent handball ,Lincoln was still allowed to play on and crushed the ball on the crossbar. Cam added another shot on the lower left post in the last few minutes of the game but all to no avail. The game remained 4-0 and the Panthers had a total of 17 shots on goal. All players -but Cesar- saw the field for a considerable amount of time.
Next up is the NLC matchup with Concord at home this Saturday. The JV kicks off at 10 am, followed by the Varsity at 11:45.
