After some tough negotiations, undersigned was able to convince an unnamed person to unblock this blog at school. Thank you.
NorthWood @ #22 Concord 1-1 (0-0)
FIRST HALF
The most exciting occurences in the first 14 minutes of the game were the interesting collection of soccer goals(11) scattered around the game field and the fact that Coach Bell was only eating an apple (must be on a diet). In the 10th minute of play, Kronk gets pushed and gets the free kick for the first time this season. He got, as the Dutch say, a cookie from his own dough. In the 14th, a handball on the Concord side results in a Seth Douwsma free kick. The shot goes at the goalie and takes an odd bounce. The GK, on his knees, is barely able to touch the ball over the goal for a corner kick. Four minutes later, Kronk crosses the ball in the box to Seth who takes a shot at goal but the ball is easily stopped by the Concord GK. Halftime score, 0-0.
HALF TIME
Just minor adjustments and concerns are addressed. Most are specific to the way we need to defend.
SECOND HALF
After the tea, the Panthers come out strong. NorthWood has the ball three minutes into the half. Seth makes a smooth cross from the left that ends up in front of Ryan Lincoln square in front of the goal near the top of the 18. A strong, good directed ball goes into the ball for the 1-0 lead. The goal is a combination of a well struck ball and great composure. In the 44th minute, Concord Alex Martin takes a hard shot at goal. The ball is stopped by Maliq. He would do this numerous time this afternoon. A minute later the Panthers get a chance of a lifetime. Several (at least 3) one-two's between Seth and Ryan ends up near the end line on Ryan's right foot. He crosses the ball across the box to Nick who faces a keeper who is completely out of position. His shot, however, misses to the left of the goal and the score stays 1-0. For a period of about 15 minutes, Concord dominates the majority of the play and tries to push forward. Right forward Brian Glick (#2) is quick on the outside and takes the ball to the endline several times for crosses and shots. In the 62nd minute Concord finally gets in front of the goal outside the box and shoots at goal. Jordan Burt is close to goal inside the box and redirects the shot. It rolls into the right corner, impossible to stop by the NW goalie. Maliq stops shot after shot and has a handle on all crosses. One clumsy ball goes thru Maliq's hand (his only hiccup in the game) but recovers by diving on the ball before Burt can poke the ball over the line. The final score 1-1 is a good reflection of the game and a great result for NW. All players who took the field today played hard and showed the crowd that had traveled with the team that it can play good hard soccer. With no losses (2 draws and 2 wins) in the last four games, the team is showing a lot of improvement in the last 10 days. That is exactly what we're looking for this time of the year.
NOTES
Next up is Plymouth (away) on Tuesday.
Bell's Boys lost 5-0 but played a pretty good game that saw some improvements on defense.
Today was Trevor's turn to miss the bus. Topscorers: Tied for first; Christian, Daniel & Trevor; all with 1.
Monday's practice will be at the High School. The sectional opponent will be known by that time
Next Thursday will be Senior Night. We will also have a tribute to our former teammate (4 year starter) defender Travis Hunsberger. The Hunsberger family (including Travis' brother Kyle who started for us for 4 years as well)will be present. NorthWood will face Bethany Christian that night.
Varsity record is now 5-4-5.

John Glenn @ NorthWood
John Glenn showed up late but made up for it by showing off their NASL reminiscent attire. The chain saw version of the national anthem was played for the first time.
FIRST HALF
The 5 o'clock kick off apparently suited the Falcons since they were able to get off two shots before the Panthers were even thinking about creating danger. In the 8th minute Ryan passed the ball to Seth outside the box and he took it in the box to take a shot. The shot disappeared in the right corner for the first, but not last, goal of the evening. In the 15th, Brandon German made a sublime pass to Seth who dribbled into space and at the goal. Seth's shot went in for the 2-0. In the 22nd minute of play, Lincoln took the ball to the end line and passed it back across the box to Nick. Nick was not able to finish it off. In the 32nd minute Cesar made a nice run on the right side but saw his shot hit the woodwork. NorthWood got another opportunity only a minute later when Maliq punted the ball far over the mid line to Seth who took it again at speed to goal and with a nice pass to goal put away John Glenn by scoring a pure soccer hat trick (3 goals uninterrupted by the opposing team by the same player in the same half). Ducky pointed out that this was his 25th career goal for NorthWood.
HALF TIME
Minor adjustments were discussed and the team was sent back in the meadow to finish off the opponents. Balogh warmed up to get ready to take over for Maliq.
SECOND HALF
The officiating crew was better then last year. Not that they were good or great by any stretch of the imagination. The center ref did okay and Jake and the Fat man on the sidelines were oblivious to most soccer rules particularly when it came to the off side rule. Lincoln might have had a hat trick himself were it not for the times he was called off side when he was not. It took only one minute into the second half for NorthWood to pick up where it left off in the first half. A Maliq punt/assist to St. Germain resulted in a run at goal. Ben went one on one with the back up of the back up goalie and scored his first goal of the campaign and NorthWood's fourth goal of the game. In the 53rd minute Lincoln made a run on the left side of the field and Ben St. Germain felt he had it today. With a passionate cry of "Lincoln, Lincoln, Lincoln, Lincoln, Lincoln, Lincoln, Lincoln", he was practically begging for the ball. The ball ended up near Seth who took a shot and off the rebound, St. Germain scored (and wounded the GK). After a Lincoln shot on the crossbar, followed by a Barahona (who had a good night with clean & crisp passing all night long) shot on the horizontal bar, the ball ended up in front of Moseman who connected for his first of the game and second of the season, 6-0. In the 64th, Maliq entered the game with the unique #2"1" on his jersey, at least for a while. In the 68th minute, John Glenn, with power forwards/wide receivers # 47, #40 and # 70 (!) on the offense got a great opportunity close to the goal. Number 40 shot what looked to be a sure goal. Michael Balogh however, made a great save (the save of the night) to preserve the shutout. This would be only the 2nd shut out of the season, both are combined shut outs where both GK's played in the game. The party was not over. Pancho Villllllaaaaaaaa saw a cross deflection go in the Glenn goal for his first varsity goal, 7-0. After some pathetic begging on the bench from Lincoln, he was allowed back in the game to boost his stats. He did not disappoint. After faking out three Glenn defenders, his shot touched the ropes for the final score 8-0.
NOTES
Next up is Concord (away), JV at 10, Varsity at 11:45.
Fortunately referee Humphrey was on the sideline. He showed improvements from a year ago altough his Under Armour might disagree. I swear I heard his Under Armour scream in pain when he was trying to take it off after the game.Note to self: Man, that stuff does not look good on fat people.
John Glenn is in our sectional as are Bremen and LaVille. On that note, the sectional draw is this coming monday at 8 a.m..

Elkhart Memorial @ NorthWood 1-1
FIRST HALF
Memorial took the ball to the NorthWood side of the field, eighty four seconds into the game, and kicked it into the 18. The ball was not cleared out of the box but headed thru it where it landed in front of a mustard colored player who put the ball high in the ropes, 1-0 Memorial. A fairly uneventful period with hardly any chances for either team ended in the 23rd minute with a goal scored off a Ryan Lincoln corner. A Crimson Charger head touched the ball and ended up over the line between the posts. You could make a case for an own goal but since it's an NLC game and the ball was last touched by Lincoln, he will be awarded the goal. The last good play before the half was a pass to Ducky on the left side of the field. Ducky took the ball with him for a couple of touches and unleashed a shot that ended up in the side net.
HALF TIME
A fairly spirited coaching staff tried to explain to the team that effort was needed to turn this thing around. The team had not played with a lot of passion in the first and was lucky the scoreboard showed a tie. Talk, pass to feet and run off the ball were the three issues addressed, and not for the first time this season.
SECOND HALF
The crowd, made up mainly of NW fans, saw a more energetic NW effort in the second half. In the 46th, Seth took the ball into the Memorial box only to be fouled from behind. The referee decided not to blow his whistle for a PK. We have seen lesser fould or no fouls (anyone remember Wawasee?) called a PK but it seemed that this night's crew in blue did not have a clue. From the man in the middle who seemed to have trouble moving around (too many churros???????) to the guys on the sidelines, all of them seemed to have trouble remembering soccer rules from one minute to the other. Apparently when NW touches the ball with their hands it's a free kick but when Memorial touches the ball with their hands, it's not. Off sides were called when the Memorial bench said it was and "Chubbs in the middle" talked to Memorial players and told them where to position themselves as if he were a coach. When coach Duerksen told him to quit talking to the Memorial players, Chubbs glared at us with a look as if his hemmoroids were flaring up. From watching him "move" over the field, they probably were. Maybe we should carry some Preparation H in our med kit from now on. In the 59th minute, Cam dribbled towads the goal but the ball got away from him. In a desperate move to keep possession, Cam went down and tried to pass the ball only to collide with a Memorial defender who ended up being carried off the field. Shortly before the end of the game a pass thru the middle ended up in front of St. Germain who made a great stepover move and passed the ball in front of Lincoln. Memorial's defense was able to push Ryan outside the box and prevent him from taking a shot. Final score 1-1. A better effort in the second half unfortunately did not result in a goal or a win for that matter.
NOTES
Bell's Boys fell to Memorial 3-1, Wesley Sneijder (Justen Hochstetler)scored a nice goal but failed to keep his promise to coach Dijkstra (will be addressed!).
Next up for the Varsity is John Glenn (potential Sectional opponent)on Thursday -tomorrow- September 25 at the unusual time of 4:30 pm (!!!!). John Glenn does not have a JV.
Next up for the JV is the away match at Concord on Saturday.

NorthWood @ Riley 2-1 (2-0)
The bus trip to Jackson field was uneventful although we missed a player again or better put; a player again missed the bus. This time it was Pancho's turn, Barahona and Villa are tied in that category. Pancho Villa's vehicle broke down on the way to the High School so we had to do without him today.
US 20 Bypass traffic was about all we could hear on the bench. When the national anthem was played coach Duerksen stated that he was pretty sure it was the national anthem since he could hear "a few bars here and there".
FIRST HALF
NW came out of the starting blocks ready to play. Play in the first 5 minutes was dictated by the Panthers. It even got better in the 6th when Lincoln passed a ball to Seth in the right corner, Seth manages to pass 4 people in the box, get himself an angle at goal, take a shot and score.......1-0. In the 11th minute Lincoln gets kicked in the head and has to go to the sideline for treatment. Some of the contents of Dr. Widner's magic black box stopped the bleeding. In the 26th minute a Douwsma free kick lands on Ryan's head but misses accuracy. This was only a few minutes after Lincoln had a decent opportunity on the right side of the box but the shot ends up in the side net. Seth was able to collect another yellow today when he got carded for a tackle from behind in the 37th minute of play.(In this space I was planning on making a smart#** comment about that but I won't right now, I'll wait til after the next one). Just before time ran out in the first half, a kick from Maliq gets touched by Conner and ends up at Ryan's feet who takes the ball at speed around the Riley (#28) right defender, beats him and takes a left footed shot at the goal. The ball disappears in the left lower corner, 2-0. We've seen Ryan do this so many times in practice and it looked similar to the opprtunity he had against Goshen that did not go in.
TEA
Quite a few "suggestions" were made during intermission. Some defensive and some offensive, so there was something for everyone. Duerksen told the team that there were only two good players on Rileys team, #9 and.........uh....#9. One of Coach Duerksen last words were "the worst thing we can do is let in a junk goal early on".
SECOND HALF
Only four minutes into the second half Riley scored a junk goal inside our box. A short range shot went in after a few defensive mistakes. In the 50th minute several 1-2's involving Seth, Cesar and Christian end in a shot that is deflected for a corner. Twenty minutes later Nick went in for a 1v1 on the Riley GK. The GK got the ball and Nick got injured. In the 74th minute it was noted that Kenny G was able to come back in the game for Riley. The rest of the game went back and forth with minor opportunities for both teams. NorthWood was able to waste the last 3 minutes so we could walk off the field with a victory. The 2-1 win improves the Panthers' record to 4-4-3 on the season. Next up is Elkhart Memorial on Tuesday and John Glenn (potential sectional opponent) on Thursday. Both games are at home.
NOTES
Fruit shish-kebabs was the team's breakfast and well liked. Thank you Ryan's Mom!!!
The bus driver told us an interesting story about a conversation she had with another bus driver in the stands. I think that Coach Duerksen will probably give the team a short summary of that very interesting story (I saw him taking notes).
No report as of yet from the JV Tourney.
The Cubs clinched the NL Central in case you didn't know. Magic number is three for homefield advantage throughout the NLCS.

NorthWood @ #23 Goshen 1-2 (0-0)
Encouraged would be the key word after last night's game. The varsity showed quite a few signs of life. In a week where we had to face two ranked teams it seemed that the only way to go was down but instead it sure looks like we're on the way up.
FIRST HALF
Both teams were feeling each other out for the first 15 minutes. Neither team controlled the game and neither team was too dangerous. The first danger came from the Goshen side about 15 minutes into the game when they launched their first shot after a corner rebound. NorthWood's first dangerous counter came in the 27th minute when Lincoln and Douwsma combined on a nice quick one touch give-n-go that ended in a near to the right miss shot from Ducky. Just a minute later, a nice hard shot from Goshen was stopped by Maliq. This would become a recurring theme by NorthWood's last man.
HALF TIME
Quite a few adjustments were drawn out on the white board. Special attention was given on how to mark and how to pass.
SECOND HALF
It did not take long for the excitment to start. A minute into the second half, Lincoln took the ball for a throw in on the left side of the field. He threw the ball to Ducky who took it with him at speed and at the goal. Despite having a Goshen defender on his back, Ducky was able to get a marvelous shot off that sailed into the right upper 90!! The 1-0 lead did not last too long unfortunately. Some clumsy defending lead to a Goshen opportunity inside the box. The close range shot went in to tie the contest. For a 10 to 12 minute period, NorthWood struggled to get any kind of control back, largely due to not marking weak side runs. In the 58th minute Goshen kicked a hard shot to the left side of the goal. This very hard, low shot was stopped by Maliq. This barrage of shots would continue in the 60th and 62nd minute. Each time the ball was kept out of the net by Maliq Taylor. His performance made him the man of the match without a doubt. In the 64th minute a midfield high ball resulted in a head to head collission between Cesar and a Redskin player. Cesar went down and it looked like he was out for the count. The Goshen trainer ran out on the field as did the NW coaches. Cesar's only visible injury was a bloody nose. After some on the field treatment and clean up the coaching staff asked Cesar the important questions. Question one: "Who are we playing?- Answer "Goshen" -correct. Question Two: "What is the score?"- Answer "1-1" -correct at the time. Question Three: "How many mistakes have you made?" - Answer "Not any" -close enough. Cesar came out with what might be a broken nose or maybe he just has a crooked, ugly nose. Probably the latter. After some more off the field treatment and cleanup, Cesar was able to continue the game. In the 67th minute a fairly weak Goshen shot from about 21 yards out was deflected near the box. Maliq was already going to his right when the shot changed direction to his left. This unfortunate deflection lead to Goshen's second goal, 1-2. In the 73rd minute, Ducky crashed to goal to rebound a save from the Goshen goalie after a nicely struck ball from Tyler Kronk. Seth put the ball against the ropes but "Gimpy the bow legged AR -yes that one, the one who cost us the game against Wawasee- called it off side. The final score stayed 1-2. Overall, the performance by the Panthers was good. Especially the second half showed some offensive power with Ducky and Ryan up front. Ryan had a nice opportunity near the end of the game going to goal with the ball on his left. The shot just didn't have enough pace to make it disappear in the goal but the threat was there. Defensively we are starting to figure it out as well. NorthWood has not given up a lot of goals. So far this has been a tough week for as far as opponents go. Warsaw is ranked 14th now and Goshen is Honorable Mention (#23). We can take a lot from this game into the next three games (Riley, Memorial and John Glenn) and come away from those games with some good results.
NOTES
Bell's Boys did not fare so well, they fell to the Goshen JV (coached by Little Joe Sabo) 1-11. Bell's highlight of the night was the Brandon Shields goal. Coach Bell was able to come away from this one with some positives as the team gets ready for a (I believe) 9 am Saturday morning contest against Northridge at the same Goshen complex.
This was by far the nicest field we have played on this year. This is what a soccer field should look like.
I forget who told me to watch where I was walking behind the bench after the game but I want to say "Thank You". I almost stepped in Cam's lunch (black beans). They look remarkably the same coming up as they do going down. Was there ground beef and red peppers in there as well?
Saturday morning the Varsity will play at 10 am at South Bend Riley. The bus will leave the AC at 8:45 am. Don't be late (Christian!).

# 17 Warsaw @ NorthWood 4-0 (2-0)
FIRST HALF
A rested NorthWood eleven started a match against a ranked opponent with lots of promise. The first 20 minutes of the match did not result in too much danger from the 17th ranked team in the state. It was a defensive letdown however, that resulted in the first drive to the goal and ultimately, the first goal. It was Warsaw MF Price who took a few steps towards goal without being challenged and the shot, from about 21 yards out, disappeared in the right upper corner. The first Warsaw corner was not recorded until the 27th minute of play. In the 30th minute, Maliq stopped a free kick that went low on the frame and only 4 minutes later, it was again Maliq who stopped another shot on the line after a defensive miscue. In the 35th minute, Warsaw's Lopez took the ball from the left midfield side and dribbled it towards the middle of the field without being challenged. The shot went in the goal, 2-0.
HALF TIME
Some marking and defending mistakes were discussed. Communication between players were addressed as well.
SECOND HALF
From the bench it was easier to see the second half now that the the sun had disappeared behind the trees. The hope was that NW would not give up a quick second half goal against a very good Warsaw team. But that is all it was, hope. In the 48th, Jesse Sharp got by Cesar and struck the ball hard inside the box. The hard shot went by Maliq who really did not have a chance on a shot that close to the goal. A defensive marking miscue led to the last goal of the night (75")when a nice cross from the right found the head of Warsaw midfielder T. Lopez. The header went into the goal making the final score 4-0. A 2-0 or 3-0 loss would have looked a little better against a ranked opponent but in the end the coaching staff was fairly pleased with the effort and the defense in general. Villa and Josh came off the bench and did well. Grendys seems to get more comfortable in his position, Cam had a good 2nd half, Lincoln worked hard and threatened a couple of times with some pressure on the Tigers' defense. Maliq had some really great stops that kept the Panthers in the game and overall, the effort was there.
NOTES
The Bell Choir lost 6-0 and has some work to do on marking and defense in general. Balogh and Shields split time between the woodwork.
Normally you would see a light sarcastic remark about the refereeing here but the officiating crew did a nice job (despite the AR on the west endline missing 2 Lincoln offsides calls).
The stands were filled last night (one spectator told me when I got home, that he could not even find enough room in the stands and had to resort to standing elsewhere to take in the game).
Improvements were also noted on the mowing crew; the field looked good with the exception of "Panthers Swamp". In the middle of the north side of the field was a lake big enough to get some waterskiing in. The field had been mowed before the game but the wet "spot" had not been, a wise decision. The field came away in pretty good shape, considering two games were played on it only a few days after heavy rains.
Next up is #15 Goshen on Thursday 9/18/8. A 5 pm start is listed for the JV, the Varsity will follow around 6:45.
