THE GAMES
NW - Oldenburg Academy
Oldenburg Academy played the way they looked, not too impressive. Despite a defensive breakdown on our side (which gave Oldenburg the 0-1 early advantage), NW managed to come from behind with a beautiful Cesar Salinas goal (goal of the season?). The hard shot looked like a knuckler and disappeared in the right upper to tie the game at 1 in the 8th minute. Ducky added two goals, one in the 11th and one in the 19th to put NW ahead for good. Nick Rethlake added a nice goal in the 55th minute of regulation and Christian took a one on one in the 68th to finalize the scre at 5-1!
NW - New Castle
A much better opponent this time even though the score might not reflect this. NW scored a lot in the first game but did not particularly play well but in the second game things started to work out much better. Crisp passes, passing to feet, good finishing and just good overall teamwork resulted in another win and this time with very good soccer and significant contributions from all players. All 16 players who made the journey to Pendleton/Anderson got significcant playing time and made the best of it. Seth scored in the 3rd minute (1-0) which would aslo be the half time score. After cooling off under the tree the team went at it and apparently was conditioned better then the opponent. Seth scored in the 45th and Ryan Lincoln in the 46th minute. Nine minutes later NW was able to take a nice corner that ended up on Cesar's head for the 4th goal in the game. Nick Rethlake concluded the scoring for the boys in black. Final score 5-0.
NW - Mt. Vernon
This was by far the best opponent. Mt. Vernon is a quick and skillful team with many sectional titles to its name. They were by far the most physical team and got away with quite a few shoves and pushes. We ended up with quite a few cards on the other hand (2 for Cesar resulting in a soft red, one for Ducky and one for coach Duerksen) Ceasr left the tournament with 2 goals, 2 yellow (one red because yellow plus yellow equals soft red). The first half belonged to Mt. Vernon and due to a mistake in the back were able to score the lone goal of the game in the 32nd minute. GK Michael Balogh was the MVP of this game with at least 3 saves in the first that all could have been goals and another one in the second half. The second half belonged to NW. A great sign considering the strenght of Mt. Vernon. The only bad thing to come out of the tournament was Brendan German's injury while time expired. After a collission with a Mt. Vernon player, Brandon fell on the very hard pitch and injured his wrist. At this time it looks like a possible broken wrist.
All in all, the tourney was a succes and it looks like we have a talented team for the 2008 season. Two a days start on 8/4/8 at the practice field at the High School and will run from 9-11 & 1-3. Be sure to bring water, running shoes and the physicals. Any questions call Coach Dijkstra at 773-3571.
