VV Grijpskerk - VEV '67 0-2
Grijpskerk loses to VEV '67 and slips to 4th place. Judging by the game video, a lot of opportunities but few if any were executed well.

Heracles - FC Groningen 1-1
FC Groningen worked hard with ten men to tie Heracles after the Nigerian midfielder Ajilore got a red card in the 2nd minute. The equalizer came from Petter Andersson in the 85th minute. FC Groningen has 7 points after 3 games and is in 1st (!!!) place overall.

NorthWood @ Riley 2-1 (2-0)
The bus trip to Jackson field was uneventful although we missed a player again or better put; a player again missed the bus. This time it was Pancho's turn, Barahona and Villa are tied in that category. Pancho Villa's vehicle broke down on the way to the High School so we had to do without him today.
US 20 Bypass traffic was about all we could hear on the bench. When the national anthem was played coach Duerksen stated that he was pretty sure it was the national anthem since he could hear "a few bars here and there".
FIRST HALF
NW came out of the starting blocks ready to play. Play in the first 5 minutes was dictated by the Panthers.It even got better in the 6th when Lincoln passed a ball to Seth in the right corner, Seth manages to pass 4 people in the box, get himself an angle at goal, take a shot and score.......1-0. In the 11th minute Lincoln gets kicked in the head and has to go to the sideline for treatment. Some of the contents of Dr. Widner's magic black box stopped the bleeding. In the 26th minute a Douwsma free kick lands on Ryan's head but misses accuracy. This was only a few minutes after Lincoln had a decent opportunity on the right side of the box but the shot ends up in the side net. Seth was able to collect another yellow today when he got carded for a tackle from behind in the 37th minute of play.(In this space I was planning on making a smart#** comment about that but I won't right now, I'll wait til after the next one). Just before time ran out in the first half, a kick from Maliq gets touched by Conner and ends up at Ryan's feet who takes the ball at speed around the Riley (#28) right defender, beats him and takes a left footed shot at the goal. The ball disappears in the left lower corner, 2-0. We've seen Ryan do this so many times in practice and it looked similar to the opprtunity he had against Goshen that did not go in.
TEA
Quite a few "suggestions" were made during intermission. Some defensive and some offensive, so there was something for everyone. Duerksen told the team that there were only two good players on Rileys team, #9 and.........uh....#9. One of Coach Duerksen last words were "the worst thing we can do is let in a junk goal early on".
SECOND HALF
Only four minutes into the second half Riley scored a junk goal inside our box. A short range shot went in after a few defensive mistakes. In the 50th minute several 1-2's involving Seth, Cesar and Christian end in a shot that is deflected for a corner. Twenty minutes later Nick went in for a 1v1 on the Riley GK. The GK got the ball and Nick got injured. In the 74th minute it was noted that Kenny G was able to come back in the game for Riley. The rest of the game went back and forth with minor opportunities for both teams. NorthWood was able to waste the last 3 minutes so we could walk off the field with a victory. The 2-1 win improves the Panthers' record to 4-4-3 on the season. Next up is Elkhart Memorial on Tuesday and John Glenn (potential sectional opponent) on Thursday. Both games are at home.

Fruit shish-kebabs was the team's breakfast and well liked. Thank you Ryan's Mom!!!

NorthWood @ #23 Goshen 1-2 (0-0)
Encouraged would be the key word after last night's game. The varsity showed quite a few signs of life. In a week where we had to face two ranked teams it seemed that the only way to go was down but instead it sure looks like we're on the way up.
FIRST HALF
Both teams were feeling each other out for the first 15 minutes. Neither team controlled the game and neither team was too dangerous. The first danger came from the Goshen side about 15 minutes into the game when they launched their first shot after a corner rebound. NorthWood's first dangerous counter came in the 27th minute when Lincoln and Douwsma combined on a nice quick one touch give-n-go that ended in a near to the right miss shot from Ducky. Just a minute later, a nice hard shot from Goshen was stopped by Maliq. This would become a recurring theme by NorthWood's last man.
HALF TIME
Quite a few adjustments were drawn out on the white board. Special attention was given on how to mark and how to pass.
SECOND HALF
It did not take long for the excitment to start. A minute into the second half, Lincoln took the ball for a throw in on the left side of the field. He threw the ball to Ducky who took it with him at speed and at the goal. Despite having a Goshen defender on his back, Ducky was able to get a marvelous shot off that sailed into the right upper 90!! The 1-0 lead did not last too long unfortunately. Some clumsy defending lead to a Goshen opportunity inside the box. The close range shot went in to tie the contest. For a 10 to 12 minute period, NorthWood struggled to get any kind of control back, largely due to not marking weak side runs. In the 58th minute Goshen kicked a hard shot to the left side of the goal. This very hard, low shot was stopped by Maliq. This barrage of shots would continue in the 60th and 62nd minute. Each time the ball was kept out of the net by Maliq Taylor. His performance made him the man of the match without a doubt. In the 64th minute a midfield high ball resulted in a head to head collission between Cesar and a Redskin player. Cesar went down and it looked like he was out for the count. The Goshen trainer ran out on the field as did the NW coaches. Cesar's only visible injury was a bloody nose. After some on the field treatment and clean up the coaching staff asked Cesar the important questions. Question one: "Who are we playing?- Answer "Goshen" -correct. Question Two: "What is the score?"- Answer "1-1" -correct at the time. Question Three: "How many mistakes have you made?" - Answer "Not any" -close enough. Cesar came out with what might be a broken nose or maybe he just has a crooked, ugly nose. Probably the latter. After some more off the field treatment and cleanup, Cesar was able to continue the game. In the 67th minute a fairly weak Goshen shot from about 21 yards out was deflected near the box. Maliq was already going to his right when the shot changed direction to his left. This unfortunate deflection lead to Goshen's second goal, 1-2. In the 73rd minute, Ducky crashed to goal to rebound a save from the Goshen goalie after a nicely struck ball from Tyler Kronk. Seth put the ball against the ropes but "Gimpy the bow legged AR -yes that one, the one who cost us the game against Wawasee- called it off side. The final score stayed 1-2. Overall, the performance by the Panthers was good. Especially the second half showed some offensive power with Ducky and Ryan up front. Ryan had a nice opportunity near the end of the game going to goal with the ball on his left. The shot just didn't have enough pace to make it disappear in the goal but the threat was there. Defensively we are starting to figure it out as well. NorthWood has not given up a lot of goals. So far this has been a tough week for as far as opponents go. Warsaw is ranked 14th now and Goshen is Honorable Mention (#23). We can take a lot from this game into the next three games (Riley, Memorial and John Glenn) and come away from those games with some good results.

Bell's Boys did not fare so well, they fell to the Goshen JV (coached by Little Joe Sabo) 1-11. Bell's highlight of the night was the Brandon Shields goal. Coach Bell was able to come away from this one with some positives as the team gets ready for a (I believe) 9 am Saturday morning contest against Northridge at the same Goshen complex.
This was by far the nicest field we have played on this year. This is what a soccer field should look like.
I forget who told me to watch where I was walking behind the bench after the game but I want to say "Thank You". I almost stepped in Cam's lunch (black beans). They look remarkably the same coming up as they do going down. Was there ground beef and red peppers in there as well?
Saturday morning the Varsity will play at 10 am at South Bend Riley. The bus will leave the AC at 8:45 am. Don't be late (Christian!).

Information on Riley & Concord away games
Starting times for both the Riley (9/20) and the Concord game (9/27) have been confirmed. The times listed on the schedules are correct. This saturday, the varsity will travel to South Bend to face South Bend Riley at 10:00 am (!). The JV will play in the Goshen JV Tourney (first round vs. Northridge)that day. On 9/27/08, both JV and varsity will travel to Dunlap to play Concord. The start of the JV game will be 10am, the varsity will see the first rotation of the ball at 11:45.
# 17 Warsaw @ NorthWood 4-0 (2-0)
FIRST HALF
A rested NorthWood eleven started a match against a ranked opponent with lots of promise. The first 20 minutes of the match did not result in too much danger from the 17th ranked team in the state. It was a defensive letdown however, that resulted in the first drive to the goal and ultimately, the first goal. It was Warsaw MF Price who took a few steps towards goal without being challenged and the shot, from about 21 yards out, disappeared in the right upper corner. The first Warsaw corner was not recorded until the 27th minute of play. In the 30th minute, Maliq stopped a free kick that went low on the frame and only 4 minutes later, it was again Maliq who stopped another shot on the line after a defensive miscue. In the 35th minute, Warsaw's Lopez took the ball from the left midfield side and dribbled it towards the middle of the field without being challenged. The shot went in the goal, 2-0.

Some marking and defending mistakes were discussed. Communication between players were addressed as well.
SECOND HALF
From the bench it was easier to see the second half now that the the sun had disappeared behind the trees. The hope was that NW would not give up a quick second half goal against a very good Warsaw team. But that is all it was, hope. In the 48th, Jesse Sharp got by Cesar and struck the ball hard inside the box. The hard shot went by Maliq who really did not have a chance on a shot that close to the goal. A defensive marking miscue led to the last goal of the night (75")when a nice cross from the right found the head of Warsaw midfielder T. Lopez. The header went into the goal making the final score 4-0. A 2-0 or 3-0 loss would have looked a little better against a ranked opponent but in the end the coaching staff was fairly pleased with the effort and the defense in general. Villa and Josh came off the bench and did well. Grendys seems to get more comfortable in his position, Cam had a good 2nd half, Lincoln worked hard and threatened a couple of times with some pressure on the Tigers' defense. Maliq had some really great stops that kept the Panthers in the game and overall, the effort was there.

The Bell Choir lost 6-0 and has some work to do on marking and defense in general. Balogh and Shields split time between the woodwork.
Normally you would see a light sarcastic remark about the refereeing here but the officiating crew did a nice job (despite the AR on the west endline missing 2 Lincoln offsides calls).
The stands were filled last night (one spectator told me when I got home, that he could not even find enough room in the stands and had to resort to standing elsewhere to take in the game).
Improvements were also noted on the mowing crew; the field looked good with the exception of "Panthers Swamp". In the middle of the north side of the field was a lake big enough to get some waterskiing in. The field had been mowed before the game but the wet "spot" had not been, a wise decision. The field came away in pretty good shape, considering two games were played on it only a few days after heavy rains.
Next up is #15 Goshen on Thursday 9/18/8. A 5 pm start is listed for the JV, the Varsity will follow around 6:45.

FC Utrecht - FC Groningen 0-2
Granquist celebrates his "Maradona" goal. FC Groningen moves into 2nd place with a 0-2 win at FC Utrecht.

VV GRIJPSKERK - 1ST TEAM
Two Goals from HJ Smit, two from Bernard Steenburgen and one each from JJ Posthumus and Peter Janse gave the "VV" its first away win in the new season. Grijpskerk shares first place with the Leeuwarder Zwaluwen. Next up is the regional derby against VEV '67 at Sport Park "De Enk" in Grijpskerk.

62 x 2 = 2 wins, three hours to nowhere.
After waking up Cesar and Eddy, which made for a rocky start of the day, the team got a notification from our "AD" that the Crown Point Invite had been canceled due to the flooding of the fields. At this point we had logged 62 miles and were west of Wanatah. Our bus driver, unusually chatty, turned the bus around and continued our trip eastbound. Technically, the cancelation turns into two forfeits. Our record now stands at 3-2-3. Tuesday is our next home game (vs. Warsaw). Due to the weather, it is unknown where practice will be held monday. An announcement will be made during the course of the day.
So, after 124 miles, the team returned to NorthWood with the advantage of being able to rest up for two ranked NLC opponents next week.

Crown Point Invite
Looks like rain, feels like rain............must be rain. Rain is in the forecast for tomorrow's tournament and it looks like rain most of the day. With the temperatures in the low 70's it will be good soccer playing weather (not watching weather). Make sure you have extra pairs of dry socks, towels and rain gear and if you have them, extra pairs of soccer shoes.
NorthWood - Wawasee 1-2 (1-0)
FIRST HALF
Some opportunities presented themselves early on in the game but it took until the 20th minute before NW was able to create some danger off a corner kick. The Wawasee Goalie found it necessary to push German down at which point the somewhat obese center referee pointed at the white dot in the box. The Douwsma conversion resulted in a change on the scoreboard, 1-0 NorthWood. For the next 18 minutes, the only excitement came from sources other then the soccer players. The Wawasee ball boy on the dug out side asked the bench if "we ever hmpff thge grrrrr championship on the grokkhyuuu" to which we had no response. I guess it is tough to respond to something you don't understand. The center ref questioned my position on the sidelines but, as is typical for most referees, must have had some substance in his eyes since he was not able to see the wide white painted lines I was walking between. So yes, I was in "my box" and he acknowledged that with a "whiny" "I see the line now". In the 38th minute, Seth hit a hard shot off a St. Germain pass inside the Wawasee box that hit the crossbar.

An optimistic re-start for NorthWood resulted in a great shot by Cesar(42nd min.). A great GK save prevented the so much needed 2-0. Two other great chances (Trevor on the goal line in the 48th & Rethlake's shot from the right side missed the goal just to the right in the 65th)should have put NW ahead by 2 or 3 goals to put the game away. Four minutes later a long distance shot by the Warriors sailed over the goalmouth and into the far post net, 1-1. With less then 10 minutes to play,(I believe it was the 75th) Chupp fouled a Wawasee midfielder from 23.5 feet away (according to the bow legged creature in yellow & black)with his -apparently very very long 25 foot-arms by pushing him down in the box. The ensuing PK was to be the last score of the game. Wawasee won its first NLC game, NorthWood fell to 1-2-3 overall & 0-1-1 in NLC. Despite the botched call, NW should have capitalized on some first half and early second half opportunities. A chance to redeem themselves will be tomorrow at the Crown Point Invite. The bus leaves at 6:15 sharp.

Four minutes later a long distance shot by the Warriors sailed over the goalmouth and into the far post net, 1-1. With less then 10 minutes to play,(I believe it was the 75th) Chupp fouled a Wawasee midfielder from 23.5 feet away (according to the bow legged creature in yellow & black)with his -apparently very very long 25 foot-arms by pushing him down in the box. The ensuing PK was to be the last score of the game. Wawasee won its first NLC game, NorthWood fell to 1-2-3 overall & 0-1-1 in NLC. Despite the botched call, NW should have capitalized on some first half and early second half opportunities. A chance to redeem themselves will be tomorrow at the Crown Point Invite. The bus leaves at 6:15 sharp.

Update on Crown Point Invite game times
The starting times on the NorthWood games are (EST -our time)as follows: 9 am vs. Wheeler, 11:30 am vs. Crown Point & 3 pm vs. Griffith. The previously listed starting times are Crown Point times (CST).

Bremen at NorthWood 2-2
With the remnants of "Gustav" looming overhead, the Panthers took the field against the Bremen Lions. An unusual 5 pm start (Bremen does not have a JV) confused one official who showed up for a 6:45 game at 6:30. The two remaining officials did a nice job of calling the game. That performance might have been one of the few highlights of the evening.
FIRST HALF
After a Bremen kick off, it was NorthWood who came out trying to control the ball. In the 4th minute a NW attack resulted in a Seth Douwsma assist to Ryan Lincoln on the left side, who, with a nice fast paced ball put the ball in the back of the ropes.The 1-0 lead gave NW the upperhand for a while. In the 12th, a deflected ball landed in front of Cam Seitz. Cam took a nice rip at the goal. The ball sailed just over the crossbar. In the 15th minute, Nick got the ball to Seth, who missed just to the right of the far post. Then the tide turned; Bremen took the ball to the NorthWood side of the field. In the 29th minute, Bremen hit the NW far post. The ball came back out and the Panthers escaped.
SECOND HALF
The Panthers' kickoff almost resulted in a 2-0 lead. The far pass to Lincoln in the PK area resulted in a challenge between the Lions GK and Ryan. A foul could have been called but wasn't. In the 44th minute, Bremen's #7 scored the tying goal when the ball disappeared in the goal on the near side of the play. Four minutes later a Cesar Salinas free kick on the NorthWood defensive end of the pitch, ended up near the left side of the Bremen box. Seth ran onto the ball and got a solid touch on the ball to goal before the Bremen GK could get to it, 2-1. In the 57th minute, Andre Hilson scored the tying goal for Bremen.The 2-2 score would stand and give NorthWood its third draw in a row.
NOTES
The Bell choir will not take the field until next Thursday at Wawasee.
Next up for NW is a NLC matchup at Wawasee. For a change, the varsity will play first (4:30) and the JV will follow at 6:15 pm.
Today's practice is at the High School.
Red & black #16 sweatbands were giving to each Varsity player in remembrance of Travis Hunsberger.
Our next opponent Wawasee beat LaVille (potential sectional opponent)4-0.
Seth leads NW in scoring with 5 goals, Ryan has 2, Trevor and Cam each have one goal scored.
Temperatures are expected to be in the 70's all of next week, which is good news considering we will play 4 games (and 3 of those in one day).
