FC Groningen season over

FC Groningen fans thank the team after a loss to NEC Nijmegen (1-3). The loss means that the FC will not play in the UEFA cup this fall. FC Groningen beat FC Utrecht at home to qualify for round 2 in the UEFA qualification play offs but lost to NEC both away and at home.

LEVCHENKO BATTLES FC UTRECHT DEFENDER BEFORE SCORING THE EQUALIZER.

FC Groningen visited the FC Utrecht hoping to come away with a tie. The return leg on Sunday will have to result in a win for one of the teams. The winner moves to the next round in the UEFA qualification playoff for the 2008-2009 season. Levchenko scored the tying goal just before the end of regulation, Lovre received a red card making him ineligible for Sunday's matchup with Utrecht at the Euroborg.

FC Groningen loses its last regular season match in an away game against FC Utrecht. Either NEC Nijmegen or FC Utrecht will be the opponent in the play offs for a spot in European UEFA competition this fall.

VV Grijpskerk celebrating the 2007-2008 3rd division championship after defeating Corenos 6-0.


VV Grijpskerk defeated Corenos Roodeschool 6-0 and easily captured the 3rd division crown. It was the club's second championship in as many seasons. Next season VV Grijpskerk will play in the 2nd division, quite an accomplishment considering the club competed in the 4th division only a year ago. It is the expectation that the team will be able to compete for a spot in the top 7 in the second division. Saturday night was a night where many players could be found celebrating while visiting the local watering holes.

FC Groningen - NAC preview

FC Groningen will play NAC Breda at home this sunday at 14:30. The game is a sell out. NAC is currently 3rd in the standings with 57 points, FC Groningen has 51 points and in 7th position.

VV Grijpskerk-Corenos preview

On Saturday April 5th, 2008, VV Grijpskerk hosts Corenos at 14:30 local time. After wins in the last two games, Grijpskerk needs one more win to clinch the championship. A win also means that the redshirts will play in the 2nd division next season. Corenos will be motivated tomorrow as well. They saw their head coach resign this week.Last week the Corenos head coach wanted to sub a player at the half but the team opposed his decision. The sub did not come in and consequently, the head coach resigned. Corenos also needs a win to get out of the relegation zone. Grijpskerk 2(B team) also plays for a championship. If they win tomorrow (Noon kick off at home as well), a championship could come as early as april 12th. Good luck to both teams, it will be a great day to spend on the sidelines at "DE ENK" sports parc.

Jeen Wobbes scores two goals at De Enk in a battle between the two best teams in the 3rd Division. With five games to go, the VV Grijpskerk is ahead by 6 points. If Grijpskerk wins the next two games, April 5th would be the day that promotion to the 2nd Division could become reality (home game vs. Corenos).

FC Groningen-SC Heerenveen 0-1

FC Groningen gives up a goal in the final ten minutes of the match to end up losing to Heerenveen. That same club now passes the FC in the tsandings.

VVV Venlo - FC Groningen 2-5

Berg battles VVV Venlo defenders

The first half was an easy one for the FC, scoring in the 16th (Lovre) and 45th (Berg) minute. The lead was extended in the 47th by Powel. Then FC Groningen decided to play sloppy and without a lot of inspiration. VVV took advantage of that attitude scoring twice to make the score 2-3. That apparantly awoke the FC Groningen offense once again who then scored in the 85th (Berg again) and 89th minute (Nijland goal). The win moves FC GRoningen up to 4th position.

VV Grijpskerk - ONR (Orange Nassau Roden) 2-1

#1 vs. #4 turned into a close match with chances and opportunities back and forth. VV Grijpskerk was able to come back from a 0-1 deficit in the 63rd minute and scored the equalizer just three minutes later. It took until the 88th minute before the redshirts were able to produce the winning goal. #2 Lycurgus beat #3 De Pelikanen.The season might come down to the crucial home game for Grijpskerk against Lycurgus on March the 15th. SO far, only two points separate the two teams.

FC Groningen - AZ Alkmaar 2-1

Two Marc Berg goals (PK shown here) defeated AZ Alkmaar on Sunday February 17 in the Euroborg. With the win, FC Groningen remains in 6th place, four points ahead of the 7th place team.

FC Groningen - Roda JC 1-1

R E D!!!!!!!

Considering that Meerdink got ejected with more then an hour to play, the 1-1 score is quite an accomplishment. Not too many spectators thought the red card was justified. On monday the judicial committee from the Royal Dutch Soccer Association concluded that the red card should not have been issued and therefore no consequences for Meerdink other then the fact that he did not get to play the entire game. The referee agreed that he made a mistake after seeing the game video but guess what; too little, too late. But, time to move on, it's water under the bridge and Vitesse Arnhem will try to make tomorrow's game a "Bridge too far" for the Groningeners.

VV Middelstum - VV Grijpskerk 3-0

An embarrassing 3-0 defeat against lowly Middelstum by way of a collective sub par performance. One more misstep like this and Lycurgus will knock the redshirts out of first place.No games are scheduled for February the 9th and that is probably a good thing. Time to sort things out and get this baby back on track.
