Oranje VC...down and out!

Oh what a night. Complete disorganization on the Sports Center's part ,eant we would start almost 2 (!!) hours late. The opponent (Mad Kickers)in this first round was not very good but seemed to have brought up some players, not seen before. After 25 minutes the score was 1-1 (Clay Seitz goal)and it was OT time. Only seconds into OT, MK attacked, went thru the defense like a hot knife thru butter and scored the losing goal (for us). End of season (3 wins, 5 losses).

Oranje VC Tournament information

The first tournament match is this Saturday (1/14/12) at 6 pm. Games only last 25 minutes. If we win the first game, we will play again at 8:30 pm. If we would lose, we are done.

UPDATE: FROM COACH SEITZ
Oranje VC will play Mad Kickers. We beat Mad Kickers 9-0 during the regular season. Oranje ended the season with a 3-5 record (8th place). Sounds like we will play at 6 & 8:30.

Open Gym update for Monday 1/9/12

Baseball workouts start tonight. This means that baseball will be in the AC until 7:30 and our OG will start after baseball gets out of the gym (which means we will not be able to get in the AC before 7:30).

Oranje VC collapses in second half

On paper this feature looked like it should be a fairly even game (FC Elite in full Arsenal kit had the same record as Oranje). The first half actually reflected that. With Josh Ailes and Taylor Wegmiller goals, the score was 2-2 at the half. But a two week lay off and Christmas meals took their toll when running turned into walking and a defensive effort was nowhere to be found, hence the 10-3 final score. Next up is the tournament this coming weekend. When game times are known, they will be posted.

For those of you who are new to this blog, this site gives information about NorthWood High School Men's soccer. This is year #6 for the blog, it started in 2007. The blog supplies information to players, parents, family members, friends and former players on the activities the program is involved in. Announcements for practices and Open Gym are posted here, game announcements are made and information will be posted on pre and post season games and events. Information about the indoor team (Oranje VC) is posted here as well and this spring we will probably post some Elkhart County United information as well as it pertains to our players.

During the season, game recaps and pictures (courtesy Lindy Seitz) are posted here the day after the game.

As a bonus (if that is what you want to call it), I post occassional news about FC Groningen and VV Grijpskerk here as well.

VV Grijpskerk update

Hope is the keyword in Grijpskerk, hope that the VV will do better in the second half of the season. After the firt half, the VV sits in 11th position with only 10 points and tied with Drenthina, just one point more then Blauw Wit '34 and only 4 more then bottom feeder Leeuwarder Zwaluwen. Effective at the end of the season, Grijpskerk's current Head Coach, Luitzen Nijboer, will try his luck at Blauw Wit '34 who signed him away from the redshirts. The "smallruggen" are now in the market for a new Head Coach and at this point is is obviously unclear whether the VV will be able to remain in the first division or , with a worse second then first half of the season, be relegated to the second division. Next up is #3 Holwierde on 1/28/12.

FC Groningen update

2012 is not starting out very well. With numerous storms and excessive rainfall, all police forces have been diverted to work near the coast to support the crews working the flooding. Therefore tonight's game with Cambuur has been canceled because there would not be enough police manpower available to guarantee the safety of the fans at the game. On Monday, the FC will fly to Tenerife (Spain) to get ready for the second half of the season. First opponent in the Eredivisie will be Heracles.

Enevoldsen (photo), the Denmark native, broke open his contract and signed a year extension, as did head coach Huistra.FC Groningen occupies 8th place and has played well as of late, not losing in the last three contests before the winter break.

This week in NW Soccer offers little, really. But everything starts back up this Sunday (1/8/12). At 9 pm, Oranje VC will take on FC Elite. Both teams have a 3-4 record. Open Gym will start up again on the first day of school, Monday 1/9/12. If there is a change on the start time of 7:30, it will be posted here. 2012 is a year with high expectations. With a good core of players coming back and a high quality of freshmen coming into the program, this promises to be a succesful year! Oh, and Happy New Year, of course!!!!

AC/ Open Gym from 7:30 - 9ish tonight, Oranje VC vs Real Hustlers on Saturday December 10th at 10 pm. Both teams are in 3rd place with a 3-2 record. Oranje has won three in a row which breaks two records; most indoor wins in a season (and the season is still young) and most consecutive wins indoor. Congratulations to Coach Seitz and Oranje VC!

Noodle is back, Jacob is running

Our seniors are getting better. Noodle is back in action. He was cleared by the doctor and was back at OG last night. His fracture healed well, the same can be said about Jacob. He healed quickly as well and he was cleared last week to run. Progress for both.

Easy win with a hat trick by Taylor and a lot of other goals by a lot of other players. And an unusual shutout considering it is indoor. he new shirts were in and so Oranje looked "oranje". Pictured above are the new shirt on left and the "alernate" on the right. Nice work by the design team. Record now 1-2, next game Saturday 12/3 at 10 (!!) pm against Montoya2.

Last night Oranje Indoor played Real Ligonier (West Noble). The score was a little on the ugly side (11-2 Loss). Next Sunday the indoor game will start at 7 pm!

Tonight will be the third OG/AC of the off season. Since the basketball season started, we will start around 7:30pm and will go til about 9 to 9:15 pm.

And that is all in another somewhat boring week in NW soccer, thank God for Mondays!!!

Tonight is the official start of the off season. Open Gym at the AC will start at 7 pm and will run until about 8:30 pm.

Tomorrow night is the Fall Awards program. This will start at 6:30 pm and will of course take place at the High School (Cafeteria or Auditorium). MVP's will be presented when all sports programs are together, after that we will break out in our own sport to award other prizes.

Also, this week (actually today, Monday) marks the deadline to pay your fee for playing on the U19 indoor team. Nine players have paid and are therefore on the roster. Time is running out and the money needs to be in by tomorrow night to Coach Seitz (you can pay him during the Awards night). If you have the money today, you can pay Coach Duerksen during school or before Open Gym.

Freshman forward Ryan Lincoln (NorthWood) scored a goal at 40:05 of the second half as the Manchester Spartans defeated Bluffton, 3-0, at North Manchester. He has played in 14 of 16 games this season (two starts) and has scored two goals while assisting on another. (From the Goshen News)

Also, it needs mentioned that Seth is having a good year. He has two goals and an assist for Indiana Wesleyan University and starts most games.

Mexico played Brazil last night

Eusebio and Coach Dijkstra had a bet, Eusebio said Mexico would win (dumb), Dijkstra said Brazil would (smart).

Eusebio challenged Dijkstra; if Mexico wins, Dijkstra washes Eusebio's limo. If Brazil would, Eusebio would caress Dijkstra's sleigh with wet rags.

Brazil was losing 1-0 (own goal Brazil of course) and Eusebio started celebrating ("only 24 min left Coach!!"). Then Brazil tied in 80th (Eusebio : "crap"), then Brazil went ahead 2-1 with just a few minutes left (Eusebio: "S*%t") and now Eusebio has to wash the Dijkstra mobile!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The boys’ varsity soccer team lost a hard fought battle against #5 ranked Warsaw in the Sectional championship Saturday evening. The loss moves their final record to 11-7 on the season. Congratulations on a great season gentlemen!!

Uniforms

With the season over, it is time to plan for the off season. First things first, the uniforms need handed in after school Tuesday. An announcment will be made at school tomorrow. Get everything washed and get it back to us.
Also, we are getting ready for the indoor season. We will have one U19 team enrolled. This team will be coached by Lindy Seitz. So far only five players have signed up. Seniors do not count towards the max of 6 players from the same high school. Hopefully we can find one more sophomore/junior to get to 6 and then complement the team with lots of seniors.
By the way, after the uniforms are handed in, a handful of players are needed to take down the nets at the game field. I noticed that the large blue signs with the seniors' names have already been removed.

2011 Sectional Finals -#5 Warsaw-NorthWood 4-0 (1-0)

The Panthers stepped on the field well prepared and ready to execute the gameplan. And it almost worked. Frustrating Warsaw with tenacious defense in the first half and it looked like we would take Warsaw to the tea with a 0-0 score. But with only 20 ticks left on the clock, Warsaw would dribble thru our box from right to left and when arriving near the left post, the Warsaw player shot the ball to his right placing it around Eddie and Kyle and into the net. The 1-0 half time score was disappointing but not a score that affected the psyche of the team. It was clear that we were still in the game mentally. Kyle had some great saves and two of them (12th and 13th min.) certainly kept us in the game. Considering everything that took place in the first it was amazing to see how the team dealt with all the adversity. Noodle never touched a ball, he came up lame in the first minute of play and never was able to re-enter the game. Clay went down with a knee injury in the 32nd but was able to continue after half time.

At the half, we talked about being patient and waiting for our chances to even the score. We did get some chances (Taylor almost put one in in a 1v1 on the keeper in the 45th) but a couple of minor miscues in the back and a bouncing ball in the back gave the Tigers the additional three goals to put them ahead 4-0, although the last two goals came very late in the game when we were taking a little bit more chances offensively. In the 54th minute, Warsaw took a long distance shot that Kyle tipped over but the goals came in the 65th, 70th and 75th minute.

It would have been nice to play a little longer with this group and we had every intention to do so. But the #5 in the State was just too much for us but tonight we showed the crowd a mature NW soccer team where all seniors played with a lot of passion and heart, the juniors matured to the point that it is clear that they are ready to lead the team and the sophomores played smart, physical and seemed to have almost grown up overnight compared to how they played the same team just a few weeks ago. Parker, Dysken, Carter and Barahona did just a terrific job. And I do have to mention the unbelievable play by Tad and Eddie in the center of our defense.

NOTES
An announcement will be made about when to turn in uniforms etc. and when we will take the nets down.

Thanks to our bus driver (but she was a lot more then that), Colleen Knepp. She has been with us for a long time and was really part of the team. We will surely miss her a lot!!!!!! This was pretty obvious when we got off the bus tonight for the last time. Good Luck to Colleen and if she would ever want to drive for us again we would surely like that!
Thanks to Lindy as well for taping games and taking pics. The game tape against Warsaw surely helped with the preparations for tonight's game.
Thanks of course to all seniors: Jacob, Collin, Connor, Vitor, Eddie, Noodle, Brandon and Josh. For the last game we had to play without Noodle,Jacob and Collin. You guys will be sorely missed, it has been a heck of ride and we had a lot of succes; we won two Sectionals, played in three Sectional Finals and this year we also won the Argos tournament. Congratulations on a succesful High School soccer career. In the last two years we have won a total of 22 games.
We will make an announcement but according to my calculations we can play "open gym" soccer on Monday October 31 (three weeks from Monday).

NORTHWOOD GETTING READY FOR WAWASEE

As sweeper/statman Jacob put it, it was "an unexpectedly warm" October night. The field was in great shape and the fan turnout was pretty good.

FIRST HALF
It starts out well. In the 4th, Eddie blasts a free kick from far out, into the box. Taylor tries to redirect but his header misses to the left of the frame. In the 16th, Josh, from the right side of the pitch, passes the ball to Connor who misses to the left of the pipes.
The rest of half turns into an ugly game of soccer where a lot of passes do not reach their intended destinations and it almost seems like we are hanging back too much and let the other team come at us, a winless team at that!

HALF TIME
It is another ugly half time talk. The players are urged to keep the game more simple by getting the ball in the Wawasee box. Their defense is suspect at best and any ball in the penalty area will create dangerous situations. The workrate in the first half is minimal and the challenge is to increase the workrate in the second half.

SECOND HALF
About six minutes into the second half the ball gets passed to Josh. Coach Duerksen encourages him to put the ball in the box. Josh gets around the ball and puts the ball in the box near Taylor, who, in turn, creates a one on one with the Warrior's keeper. Taylor stays composed and puts the ball against the ropes. 1-0. In the very next minute, Connor crosses a ball from the right side of the field into the box and it is again Taylor who takes possession of the ball, challenges the goalie and places the ball in the net for the 2-0. The rest of the game is not real pretty but Wawasee never really threatens. The final score of 2-0, puts the Panthers in their 5th Sectional Finals in the last 6 years.

NOTES
Noodle only played a partial game and will spend the rest of the week in the trainer's room for treatment so he can be ready for Saturday's game.
Eddie received a yellow card, but since the cards reset before the tournament he is eligible for Saturday. One more yellow and he will have to sit out the next game.
The record for NW is 11-6 and the 11 wins ties the school record for wins. Last night's shutout is the 6th of the season. Over the last two seasons we have now accumulated 22 wins and 15 shutouts. We have only been defeated 11 times in our last 36 games.
Warsaw defeated Culver Academies 5-0 (2 Culver goals were disallowed, the first one for sure should have counted).
The Warsaw-NorthWood matchup will take place on Saturday at Warsaw High School at 7 pm. The weather will be perfect, we are hoping for a great turnout from our fans.

Jacob and Collin are out for the game and Noodle is struggling with a leg injury, unknown if he will be fit for the game.

Today's practice focuses on Wawasee. Tomorrow (gameday) the bus will leave the AC at 3:45 pm. The game vs. Wawasee will start at 5 pm. Look at older posts for directions to Warsaw High School, site of the 2011 Sectionals. If we win Wednesday, we will have regualr practices Thursday and Friday at the gamefield. Announcement about Saturday activities will be made later.

NorthWood-Plymouth 5-2 (3-1)

The game was delayed about 89 hours and moved about 7 miles. But for the first time in about 9 days, the sun came out and started drying the field, although it will be a while before it is done. The original game was to have taken place last Tuesday at the game field, moved to the practice field only to end up in the next town over. Game time was originally scheduled at 4 and 4:30 but finalized at 2 pm until Plymouth called to get some directions and that is when we found out, Plymouth was scheduled to arrive around 3:30 pm. So the starting time again was changed, this time we would start between 4 and 4:30. It ended up starting at 4:15 under sunny skies. The drama was over and the actual "Senior Night" Game could start.

FIRST HALF
It only took the Panthers 4 minutes to figure out a way to slice thru the Pilgrims defense. A thru ball on the ground to Taylor from Noodle took only a couple of touches to find its way into the net, 1-0. Five minutes later, Connor had another chance finding his way thru the defense and coming eye to eye with the Plymouth keeper but his shot missed accuracy. A defensive miscue and a little bit of a slow reaction gave Plymouth's Smith an opportunity to take the ball from the middle of the field right to Kyle. His effort hit the target to tie the score. In the 22nd, the Pilgrims battled their way to the goal from about 2 yards out but a great save by Kyle kept us in the game. Clay probably felt that he could run quicker today because he was wearing a much lighter shirt then anyone else; his back numbers had fallen off the shirt. Nothing that some electrical tape won't take care of for the next game. The narrow and somewhat bumpy field made good soccer nearly impossible.
In the 34th minute, Taylor played a nice ball to Vitor (inside the box combination) who scored his first -but not last- goal of the afternoon. The 2-1 lead would be extended to a 3-1 lead when Carter Beebe passed the ball to Vitor who turned and shot at goal. The ball hit the ropes for a 3-1 lead. The two goal lead would take us to the half. The only negative occurence was that Eddie received a yellow caution for using foul language.

HALF TIME
Senior Night introductions with parents would dominate the half. Josh Ailes, Connor Beckwith, Roman Ortiz-Prather, Eddie Salinas, Brandon Shields, Jacob Smith, Jordan Thompson and Collin Tucker were all recognized with their parents.

SECOND HALF
Plymouth's Micah Harner would receive a yellow card one minute into the half and a mere 6 minutes later it looked like the Panthers would extend their lead with a Taylor to Connor combo but Connor's good shot was saved by the Plymouth keeper.
In the 50th minute, Kyle would get his first assist of the season. His long punt landed in front of Vitor "Pele" Rosario who took the ball at his feet and shot at the goal outside the box to sign for his third (hattrick!)goal of the game to give NW a 4-1 lead. A fairly physical (read "like to foul for no reason")but not very talented Plymouth -only 5 wins for the year- would give up a free kick but failed to set up a quick wall. From about 26 out, Eddie decided to take a free kick quickly when the Plymouth defense was still in disarray. The quick restart shook the wet, very wet dust off the ropes for a 5-1 NW lead. All seniors were taken out with about 5 mintes left in the game to give them recognition for their years of service. All seniors would play significant minutes this game. In the 64th minute of play, another bad defensive play gave Plymouth's Smith the chance for his second goal. His effort went in for the final score, 5-2.

So, after all the drama in the run up to the game, the game itself was fairly uneventful. The win secured a top 4 spot in NLC and a winning record in NLC (4-3), something that has not been done in a lot of years! Congratulations to the seniors who have had a good regular season. Jacob and Collin had to watch the game from the "bench" unfortunately. Jacob surely was the most improved player over the off season and it was a loss to the team to have to play without two important corner stones of our defense. It is good to see both are recuperating well from their injuries.

NOTES
The win elevates the team's record to 10-6-0 (4-3 NLC). The next game is at the Warsaw Sectional in the first semi final this coming Wednesday at 5 pm against Wawasee. We defeated Wawasee 1-0 during the regular season.
Thanks to Norm to make yesterday's game happen! Thanks to Todd Wegmiller to get us water/ice etc for yesterday's game. Thanks to the City of Nappanee for loaning us their sound system. Thanks to all the parents of our seniors for making senior night and the last 4 years possible.
Yesterday's game had about 80 + spectators,none of which had to pay.

This is just an update to let everyone know that the soccer game against Plymouth on Saturday has been moved to the middle school in Wakarusa at 2:00PM. The game will be played on the middle school soccer field. We would like the parents of seniors to be there around 1:30 in order to go through senior “night” activities. I know this is not the best situation for all of us, but it is our only option at this point. Our game field has too much standing water on it, and our practice fields are in terrible condition right now. We need to play the game before Monday because Plymouth plays their sectional game on Monday, and they do not want to play Saturday night because of the short turnaround. We simply have to make the best out of what we have. Please pass this message on to parents/fans because we would like to have a nice fan turnout for our seniors. Also, bring lawn chairs because we probably won’t have bleachers. Now for the good news—entry to the game is free.

1A #3 Bethany Christian - NorthWood 4-1 (3-0)

A poorly played first half by NorthWood resulted in a 3-0 Bethany advantage after 40 minutes of play. A slow and lazy looking NorthWood in the first half, gave away to a transformed and energetic looking TEAM in the second half led by senior Connor Beckwith. A confrontational half time was meant to wake up the Panthers and get them to realize that there is a lot left to fight for, the remainder of the season. The encouraging part of Thursday's game is that the team definitely responded.

The first half could not have started worse when marks on the weak side were lost on one of the first Bethany attacks resulting in a Hollinger Janzen goal within 6 minutes. Just a little later, the same Hollinger-Janzen would get the ball near the box and a slow attempt to get in front of the ball is not enough to block an unbelievable shot that lands in the left upper 90 for a 2-0 lead. Apathy seems to be the best word to describe the rest of the half.

A much better second half results in better play overall. Faster and better passes, more pressure on the Christian's midfield results in more possession. An unfortunate attempt to defend the ball out results in a Bethany steal in the box ending up in the ropes for a 4-0 score. But the Panthers kept on playing and playing well at times. With 7 minutes left in the match, Connor crosses the ball from the right flank into the box where Eddie meets up with the ball. The ball ends up over the chalk for the final score, 4-1. The assist for Connor is well deserved after he turned out to be one of the NW workhorses in the second half. If we only could have done it for 80............

NOTES
The JV played its final game of the season and lost 4-2 after going ahead 2-0 on a Jair and Brandon Shields goal early on. Their record for the 2011-2012 is 2-11-1 so there is room for improvement. Thanks to Tom Shields and Kenny Beachy for coaching the JV and we hope to see them back next season.

Thanks also to Colleen Knepp, our bus driver, who first took the JV to Goshen and then came back to pick up the Varsity a couple of hours later so they did not have to sit in the rain for hours. Now that she has become a northwoodsoccer.blogspot.com follower it has become impossible for me to talk about her on the blog any longer.

The Varsity played very well the first ten minutes of the second half, despite being down a man (only ten players stepped on the field after play resumed). Eusebio came in to make us a full team again.

All JV players should get their uniforms washed (to get rid of the pounds of Bethany dirt); an announcement will be made when shirts/shorts & warm-ups need to be handed in.

At this point, we are still on for a 2 pm Saturday NLC/Senior "night" game at the game field. If there are any changes, I will make sure to post those here!

The 2011 senior night dinner took place last night at the High School cafeteria. All seniors were in attendance and on the cake. Thanks to all parents who made the great food and to Sherry Beckwith for organizing the event. Lindy Seitz was presented with a picture signed by all players and coaches thanking him for years of taking pictures and videos.
